Electrician Job Description

Nature & Scope

The Electrician position is responsible for installing, maintaining, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems, wiring, equipment, and fixtures in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. This role ensures that all electrical work complies with applicable codes, safety standards, and regulations. The electrician may handle new installations, system upgrades, preventative maintenance, and emergency repairs.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Completion of an electrical vocational or technical program, or certification or licensure (journeyman or master electrician) preferred
• Completion of an electrician apprenticeship or equivalent on-the-job training
• Valid electrician’s license or certification as required in the jurisdiction
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings
• Strong knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), local building codes, safety protocols, and best practices
• Proficiency with electrical tools and testing instruments, including multimeters, ammeters, voltage testers, and conduit benders
• Strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, integrity, and problem-solving ability
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines

Job Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, control systems, lighting, fixtures, panels, conduit, switches, receptacles, and related components
• Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and specifications to plan electrical routing and layouts
• Diagnose electrical issues, test circuitry, trace faults, and determine corrective actions
• Replace or repair damaged wiring, components, or fixtures
• Install or upgrade safety and distribution components such as circuit breakers, fuse boxes, panels, and grounding systems
• Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and system tests to ensure safety and reliability
• Ensure all work complies with the NEC, local codes, and safety standards
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, time spent, and reports for management or clients
• Provide guidance or training to apprentice or junior electricians when applicable
• Respond to emergency service calls or power outages as required
• Coordinate with other trades, project managers, or clients regarding job progress
• Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety protocols

Working Conditions (Travel, Hours, Environment)

• Standard business hours with potential overtime, weekend, or on-call shifts
• Work may occur indoors or outdoors in varied weather and environmental conditions
• May require work in confined spaces, at heights, or overhead
• Frequent travel between job sites or project locations
• Use of electrical tools, equipment, lifts, and diagnostic devices
• Exposure to electrical hazards, noise, dust, and other variable conditions

Physical and Sensory Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry heavy tools, materials, or equipment up to 50 pounds or more
• Climbing, crawling, bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, and working overhead
• Good vision, including color vision for wiring identification, hearing, and manual dexterity
• Ability to perform precise work and use tools safely and accurately
• Physical endurance for extended shifts

OSHA Category Classification

• Moderate to high risk due to working with electricity and exposure to electrical, mechanical, and environmental hazards
• Must follow OSHA guidelines, NFPA standards, and industry safety practices
• Safe handling of wiring, electrical equipment, insulation, and tools is required
